Seattle, WA (July 28, 2022)- Crews are investigating reports of a fire near the 8000 block of 16th Ave NW in Seattle on Thursday.
The incident occurred on southbound Interstate 5 between Lakeview and Mercer Street exits.
Crews identified a flatbed truck with liquid oxygen tanks on fire as tanks exploded while hazmat crews investigated the truck to verify whether it had cooled down.
The fire had been brought under control, the Seattle Fire Department said.
Video footage showed a tanker exploding on I-5 in Downtown Seattle while a flaming tank of liquid oxygen was flying down the interstate.
No injuries were reported in the incident, which caused major traffic disruptions to I-5 in both directions.
Road users were asked to expect traffic delays and slow down as they approached the scene while residents living near southbound I-5 at Lakeview Blvd. E was advised to close windows and doors to avoid smoke exposure from the fire incident.
Crews had limited hydrant access and requested water trucks from the Seattle Department of Transportation and Boeing, SFD said.
