Toxic Exposure At Sky Valley Education Center In Monroe

Monroe, WA (November 12, 2021) – A jury has awarded $62 million to students and parents who alleged they suffered brain injuries from exposure to toxic chemicals at their public school.

More than 200 students, parents, and teachers from Sky Valley Education Center – located southeast of Snohomish – claimed that their school grounds are infested with PCBs, which can cause several illnesses.

After months or years on the Sky Valley campus, the plaintiffs say they developed neurological problems, skin lesions, cancer, and other illnesses.

In a statement, Bayer said that it disagrees with the verdict and plans on filing an appeal.

PCBs are no longer used to produce electrical devices, with federal safety laws banning them in 1979. Scientific studies linked PCB exposure to various forms of cancer, neurological damage, and other serious diseases.

According to the lawsuit, fluorescent lights caught fire and dripped oil onto classroom floors, exposing students to PCBs between 2011 and 2016.

Since the incident, the Sky Valley campus has been deemed safe by health officials after they cleaned the contaminated parts of the building.
