Tacoma, WA (May 21, 2022) – A suspected DUI driver killed a passenger in Tacoma Friday morning, Washington State Patrol said.

The crash occurred around 3 a.m. on State Route 509 at Taylor Way East when the driver crashed into a telephone pole and killed his 29-year-old passenger.

The driver was traveling southbound on the highway alongside his passenger when his Nissan Maxima left the roadway to the right and hit a pole, WSP said.

The passenger, identified as Neil Blankenship of Tacoma, was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead at Tacoma General Hospital.

The driver was also taken to the hospital with injuries, although the extent of the injuries remains unknown.

Troopers said that neither the driver nor his passenger was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Vehicular homicide charges await the driver once discharged, Trooper Robert Reyer said.
